Hanoi's Top 3 Restaurants: CNN & Michelin Recommended Courses Chosen by a Family in Their 40s

Are you curious about Hanoi restaurants even your picky teenage son can appreciate? We're revealing the top three CNN & Michelin-recommended courses, selected and personally experienced by our 7-night, 8-day traveler. The secret to a successful Hanoi family dining experience!

Hanoi (Northern Vietnam) Pho Characteristics

Having visited Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, several times, my first impression of Hanoi was that it felt much more humane and lived-in. While Ho Chi Minh City was a much cleaner and more upscale travel destination, Hanoi felt like a more approachable place where I could experience the true nature of the Vietnamese people.

My teenage son's top 3 restaurants in Hanoi

1. PHO Thin

Located in Hanoi's Koreatown, My Dinh, Pha Dinh is among the many Korean restaurants, but it is still

This is a typical northern Vietnamese rice noodle dish, with only green onions on a clear broth, without the usual host, cilantro, or other vegetables that you might think of.

Purdin's special rice noodles have large bones.

2. Quán Nem

Since they cook as soon as an order comes in, you usually have to wait about 20 minutes after ordering, so we recommend making a reservation in advance.

Hanoi restaurants, which are located right next to each other, are a special feature of the building.

While regular bun cha is served with meat in a sweet and sour sauce, guan nem is served on a hot grill, so you can enjoy the meat warm and deliciously until the last bite.

And since there is a hot brazier, those visiting with children should be careful.

Along with Bun Cha (91,000 VND), Spring Rolls (91,000 VND) are also very famous. They are a popular menu item with many people as they contain shrimp and crab meat inside the spring rolls.

3. Quán Ăn Ngon

Quan An Ngon is one of the most popular restaurants among tourists visiting Hanoi. It boasts a large dining area and a splendid interior. It is a place where you can enjoy a variety of Vietnamese home-cooked meals.

However, the bun cha and banh xeo I ordered weren't quite up to my expectations. (This may be because I've only eaten at delicious restaurants while traveling around Vietnam.)

However, the rice noodles and seafood fried rice I had here were a bit special. I recommend ordering the basic menu instead of the various other options.

The magnificent entrance to Quan An Ngon

The rice noodles were, as expected from the northern Vietnamese style, very clean and refreshing. It wasn't particularly spicy or salty, so you could add chili peppers or seasonings to suit your taste.

The best restaurant would be one that brings out the flavor of the soup alone, right? The rice noodles have a clean taste that I have never tasted anywhere in Ho Chi Minh.

Honest Reviews of Hanoi's Top 3 Restaurants

While traveling around Hanoi, I visited a wide variety of restaurants, including the Korean tteokbokki brand "Dukki" and Fastfoods.

Nevertheless, the reason these three restaurants we ate at in Hanoi remain the most memorable for us isn't just because of their taste, but also because of their atmosphere. Honestly, I'm confident these three restaurants would be a perfect fit for any Korean.

Some people believe that Airbnb is illegal in Vietnam due to Vietnam's revised Housing Law. 🔎Vietnam's Housing Amendment Law to be enacted in 2023 Check out the details.

Renting out apartments for short-term purposes other than residential purposes is explicitly illegal, and regulations are particularly strict in Ho Chi Minh City, the economic hub, while Hanoi feels relatively less so.

Because while Airbnb bookings were difficult in Ho Chi Minh City, they were relatively easy in Hanoi (legitimate accommodations are available for booking).

But still avoiding the law There are cases where they are operating illegally, so be sure to check thoroughly before making a reservation. We recommend that you decide on your accommodation through .

2. Mastery West Heights Review

The time I stayed here was around the end of August 2024. I searched recently and found that the accommodation is still in operation. It was.

Of course, the price was a little different than when we booked, but it was still a very good price.

The ability to enjoy spacious, recently built, state-of-the-art apartments at affordable prices is incredibly appealing. Now, let's take a closer look at Mastery West Heights.

Masteri West Heights is classified as a luxury residential development and offers modern design and a variety of amenities.

luxury apartments

These luxury apartments in Hanoi are said to be popular with the upper-middle class and wealthy, foreign residents, and those looking to invest in the Vietnamese real estate market due to its potential for growth.

  • In fact, there are a lot of Westerners living in this apartment.
  • There are very few people who appear to be tourists and many appear to be long-term residents.

As soon as I entered, I noticed how clean and tidy the house was.

It seems to have been built not long ago, has not been used much, and is clean and well maintained. Above all, it is a place that you can see everywhere in Vietnam. It felt cleaner without the bugs.

Every nook and cranny is well-organized, as if it were newly built

There are two rooms, two bathrooms, a living room, a veranda, and finally a veranda on the kitchen side where you can dry your laundry. It was spacious enough for three families to live in.

For those who enjoy the freedom of more space for the same price, there's no better place to stay than Airbnb. Of course, accommodations in this good condition are even better.

Neatly arranged bedding

The bedroom was even more satisfying. Since my family of three is one, one room wasn't enough. Two rooms were more comfortable. The large windows let in plenty of light, making for a pleasant stay.

Amenities

As expected from a luxury apartment, various amenities were provided to those using the apartment.

The outdoor pool on the first floor, another indoor pool on the top floor on the 38th floor, a gym, and even a table tennis room that my son likes are all very clean and well-maintained.

The table tennis court and gym weren't very crowded on weekdays, and the pool was relatively quiet. Both were well-maintained and kept very clean.

However, while we were using the pool, a group of what appeared to be Chinese people were kicked out for smoking in the indoor pool. (Such incidents still happen in Vietnam.)

Surrounding information

Because it is a large apartment complex, there are no restaurants on the first floor or within the complex.

Most people usually take Grab to go downtown and there are nearby Go to Vincom Megamall (10 minutes drive away, the largest shopping mall in Vietnam) and eat at a restaurant. You can do it.

It is also about a 15-minute drive from My Dinh (Hanoi Korea Town).

In Vietnam, you can find authentic Korean food no matter where you go. This is thanks to the well-developed food delivery app system.

Whether we were traveling in southern Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City, or northern Vietnam, Hanoi, there was one app we absolutely needed. Delivery Kis an app.

I don't really like installing apps on my phone, but this app makes it really easy to get Korean food delivered, and since it's served by Koreans, it's really convenient to use even when you're overseas.

Essential information for traveling by train in Vietnam with your family, as shared by a father in his 40s.

Planning a train trip from Nha Trang, Vietnam, to Hanoi? We'll share with you various information, including how to book tickets online, board the train, and the condition of the four-person sleeper car.

Traveling by train from Nha Trang to Hanoi

Train tickets from Nha Trang, a popular tourist destination for Koreans, to Hanoi in the north are available for reservation.

There are several sites where you can make reservations, the first of which is operated by a Singaporean company. 12GOSecondly, there is one that is directly operated in Vietnam. Railway reservation siteThere is.

👉 Book train tickets with KlookIt is most convenient to dodo.

📅 Nha Trang Hanoi Train Schedule and Prices

In my case, I booked my ticket through a website called 12GO, but later discovered it was operated by a Singaporean company. I had no problems booking my train ticket. We recommend booking directly on the Vietnam Railways reservation website.Do it.

When you reserve a ticket, you will receive a confirmation QR code and a PDF file containing information about the train you will be boarding via email. I will just go over a few things you must check on the ticket.

  • Confirm destination

Make sure to check if the route is Nha Trang ➡ Hanoi

  • Check train number

The "SE12" written behind "Train" is the train number. When you arrive at the train station and find it difficult to find any information about the train, knowing SE12, the arrival number, is essential.

  • Check train arrival time

You should check the arrival time of the train you need to board at the station, and you can check the car and seat number, so it is a good idea to be sure to familiarize yourself with the car, seat, and time.

(In my case, I often don't check my boarding pass until I get off the plane, but I always take a screenshot to confirm my seat!)

How to board the train at Nha Trang Station

This is the Nha Trang train station where I boarded. Since my train was scheduled for 4:26 AM, I took a Grab and arrived at the station around 4 AM.

The outside was brightly lit with flashy lights, but the inside felt like a small neighborhood bus stop I remember visiting when I was young.

Vietnam trains have recently introduced two-person VIP sleeper cabins, and the price of these cabins can be comparable to, or even more expensive than, a flight from Nha Trang to Hanoi.

Also, because there aren't enough seats, they tend to sell out quickly. The next level up is the four-person VIP sleeper car, and this is the train I rode.

Vietnam train travel 4-person sleeper compartment condition

It is hot during the day and cold at night or in the early morning. The cleanliness of the restrooms is absolutely not something you can expect, so if you think, "I can't do it without a clean environment or accommodation," choose a flight if possible. It is good to do so.

In particular, the distance from Nha Trang to Hanoi is 1,300 km, which is about three times the distance from Seoul to Busan, so it is a distance that can be reached in less than two hours by plane, but it takes a full day and five hours by train.

The Vietnam train journey takes about 30 hours, and frankly, it is difficult.

The condition of the washbasin inside the train that I used morning and evening

The train I rode was SE12, and there was no dining car inside the train, only 4-person and 6-person cars, and no seats in the train car.

Sometimes, at large train stations, I pass another train, and judging by the dining car, it seems that some trains have different dining cars.

When arriving at a large station among the stations that stop at lunchtime, there are cases where the train stops for a long time, such as 10 minutes, as announced. During this time, you can get off the train for a short while and buy a light snack at a store near the station.

So, you must be very curious about how you manage to eat during those 30 hours.

Some people may remember selling steamed eggs or cider by walking between the seats on the Tongil-ho or Mugunghwa-ho trains when they were young. This is similar to the scene.

They also sell simple drinks, small banh mi, and small lunch boxes that look like mi goreng while pushing a cart, so you don't have to worry because you can buy them at a cheap price (most drinks are 20,000 VND, and lunch boxes are 40,000 VND).

The taste is not bad considering the price. It was.

Should I take the Nha Trang ⮕ Hanoi train trip?

If you choose a VIP sleeper car because you have to take a long train ride, the price is definitely not cheaper than that of an airplane.

Also, deciding to travel for over 30 hours and face a not-so-clean and pleasant restroom when you can get there in less than 2 hours by plane is not an easy decision.

However, you can enjoy the real beauty of Vietnam outside the window at any time, as much as you want. If you want to experience a truly offline trip where even 3G doesn't work well in many places, we welcome you with open arms. And I recommend it.

After experiencing these unforgettable 30 hours, I, too, found myself overwhelmed with gratitude for the easy access to Wi-Fi and readily available food and drinks. Isn't this what travel is all about? I wonder.
